Description
Organic Melon: Sugar ball. Cucumis melo L.
A Selection from Benarys, Organic Melon – Sugar ball. A Cantalopue type of melon with beautifully bright orange flesh with the seeds taking up little space with a small seed core. Bred carefully and using Demeter standards to maintain original charasteristics, this juicy number is highly aromatic, sweet and juicy!
How to grow:
Sow seeds in pots on heat in March/April/May. Grow on till there are three true leaves then plant in the ground when there’s no chance of a frost. Ripening end August beginning September and through to October. Growing in a greenhouse/polytunnel or a warm spot in a walled garden is essential! (Especially with our weather :’D). Grow in dry conditions but keep well watered, preferably from below. High nutrient requirement.
Problem solving:
Keep slugs off when young. Keep them hot and dry on top with wet soil underneath.
Favourite ways to eat them:
You can eat them fresh and warm, or like me, cooled from the fridge! :P
Cultural history:
This creeping vine in the cucurbitaceae family originates from India, cultivated for 1,000’s of years.
Avg contents: 10 seeds.
