Organic Pea: Eerste Vroege Mei. Pisum sativum.
Organic Pea: Eerste Vroege Mei, translates to. First early may this is a great wee productive rice pea, suited to all soil types so great if you’re new at this!. Crinkly, and wonderfully sweet, like my nanny <3.
How to grow:
As a climber, cultivate along a wire netting sowing on both sides of the net. Sow in February to transplant out in March or sow directly in March/April for harvest in June/July. To promote growth, regularly pick the pods with peas juicy and ready.
Problem solving:
Mice love to eat them hence planting at 3-4cms deep. If you’ve a real problem start in pots until they’ve sprouted then plant out. Snails like them, put if you go out at dusk you can pick them off. Another problem you can have with peas is powdery mildew, you can keep this to a minimum by, watering regularly and making sure the roots don’t dry out, watering from below, prick out infected leaves and destroy them, encourage movement of air through the crop. If you have the pea moth you can cover the crop with enviromesh in June and July when they are laying.
Favourite ways to eat them:
You can use these peas in a variety of ways including briefly cooked, steamed, stir-fried, stewed or mashed. Used in salads, stews, as a delicious separate vegetable and in soups. They can also be frozen!
Cultural history:
From the Mediterranean basin and the Near East it’s been dated back to Neolithic times and later in Egypt from 4,800BC, it had travelled to India by about 2,500BC.
Avg contents: 120 seeds.
From june 2024 to Jan 2026 i had the weight wrong and customers were shortchanged with around 90 seeds instead of 120. Massive apologies if this affected you. I have fixed it now and if you let me know i’ll give you extra this time. Debbie.
