Organic Stevia. Stevia rebaudiana is a herbaceous perennial that is not frost hardy. It has soft leaves that are known for their sweetness. Stevia is recognised as a safe alternative to sugar. Grows to a height of 30 – 60 cms.

How to grow

Surface sow seeds indoors in modules, germination is light dependant. Keep the temperature a steady 20C and give 16 hours of light. You may want to use artificial lighting or a grow cabinet, germination can take 2-3 weeks. Prefers rich warm free draining soil (but not hot).

Problem solving

Do not allow soil surface to dry out, keep surface misted and moist. People pinch out the flowers to encouraage leaf growth, which is where the sugars are.

Uses

About 30 times sweeter than sugarbeet.

Native to parts of Brazil and Paraguay.
