Green manure Lacerta, leafy chicory. Cichorium intybus.
Chicory is a very popular green manure species. It is very deep rooting, suiting dry soils, coping well with drought. Height to 150cms. High in protein it can also be used for grazing. Putting in green manures is also an effective and quick way to capture carbon out of our atmosphere.
How to grow:
Direct sow no later than early September to ensure safe establishment in time for the winter or spring for a quick summer feed.
This is a fairly problem free plant. It’s non-native to Ireland so it is ideal to turn into the ground before it sets seed – unless you want to save seed from it, which is perfectly feasible. Flowers in second year.
Favourite ways to use them:
Great as a green manure.
Average 830 seeds per gram.
