Description
Organic French Dwarf Bean: Domino. Phaseolus vulgaris.
Delicate, stringless French bean with a fine flavour. Plant height 40-60cms. High yielding, the pods all set together and are suitable for both mechanical harvest or one-time picking by hand. Sow successionally for differing harvests.
How to grow:
Start them in pots in April and plant out in May. Or sow direct outside from May to July, 2 seeds, 5cms deep, 20cms apart and thin out.
Problem solving:
Keep slugs off when young apart from that really hassle free. Sow in a moderately sheltered place.
Favourite ways to eat them:
These are stringless so eat whole. Amazing in salads where this variety will add colour. or lightly steamed (once cooked they turn dark green) drizzled with olive oil and salted. A fabulous addition to stir fries and stews. The combination of beans and rice is well known worldwide, the combination makes up a complete or whole protein – defined as a food source of protein that contains an adequate proportion of each of the nine essential amino acids necessary in the human diet. Perfect if you’re vegan.
Beans can be frozen for use later, blanch first.
Cultural history:
An ancient crop, one of the oldest we cultivated. Originating from the south and central Americas, it has been grown in Europe since the 16th century.
