Description
Organic Broccoli: Green Calabrese. Brassica oleracea.
Produces a central head and then goes on to produce many smaller heads over a longer period after harvesting the main central head, making it perfect for your vegetable garden successional harvesting. The leaves are also very tasty.
How to grow:
Sow successionally from late Feburary, transplant when about 8 – 10cms tall that’s after 4 – 6 weeks and harvest from July on, until about November. Sow into modules or a seed bed 0.5cms deep, thin out or transplant out to a spacing about 45cms. If you’re growing for seed space about 60cms apart.
Problem solving:
Keep slugs and pigeons off them especially when small. The cabbage butterflies will love them come August, so covering with enviromesh, or something like it will save you picking off many little caterpillars.
Favourite ways to eat them:
Fine tasting, lovely steamed with a drizzle of olive oil and salt, just delicious whatever you do.
Cultural history:
Cultivated early on, like many of the brassicas it became popular in the times of the Roman empire.
Seed weight: 1g ~300 seeds.
