Organic Courgette: Black Beauty. Cucurbita pepo var. cylindrica.
Vigerous growing medium-early variety. Heavy cropping cylindrical deep green fruits, short internodes. Successive sowing gives a long copping period from July to September.
How to grow:
Sow seeds into modules in April on heat. Pot on into bigger pots and keep inside until all danger of frost has passed, early June then plant out. Keep sheltered from the wind and well watered, they do best in full sun. Successive growing recommended.
Keep slugs off when young. Watering from underneath will help keep mildew off the leaves.
Favourite ways to eat them:
I suppose my favourite way to eat them is diced in risotto, but equally good in currys, pasta, you name it. Or another way, for the round courgettes, hollow out, fry onions, other veg you love and the courgette inners with rice, stuff back into the skin and bake in the oven, melt cheese on the top if you like cheese.
Supposed to be one of the oldest cultivated vegetables around, originally from Mexico.
