Description
Organic Courgette: Selection Sativa. Cucurbita pepo.
A surprisingly hardy early courgette with yellow, very tender-skinned fruit, which keeps fruiting until the end of October.
How to grow:
Sow seeds into modules from March on heat to May. Pot on into bigger pots and keep inside until all danger of frost has passed, early June then plant out. Keep sheltered from the wind and well watered, they do best in full sun.
Problem solving:
Keep slugs off when young. Watering from underneath will help keep mildew off the leaves.
Favourite ways to eat them:
I suppose my favourite way to eat them is diced in risotto, but equally good in currys, pasta, you name it. Or another way, for the round courgettes, hollow out, fry onions, other veg you love and the courgette inners with rice, stuff back into the skin and bake in the oven, melt cheese on the top if you like cheese. The beautiful colour and soft skin of Selection Sativa means it looks and tastes great in salads.
Cultural history:
Supposed to be one of the oldest cultivated vegetables around, originally from Mexico.
Avg contents: 15 seeds.
