Green Manure. Organic Golden Millet. Panicum miliaceum.

An annual clump forming grass crop. Millet has a wide range of growing conditions. Its method of carbon fixing is slightly different from most plants and is suited to warmer temperatures. So grow this in a warm sunny spot for best results.
Millet is a main ingredient in bird feed cover crops, finches in particular loving the seed.

How to grow:

Sow direct from beginning of April to end of August at 4 to 6g/square metre at a depth of 2cms after all danger fo frost has passed. It’s fast growing and how you treat it depends on whether you’re growing it for a green manure or a food crop. For green manures the advice is to turn them into the soil before seed set, so your soil isn’t full of the seed. For a crop the advice is to harvest as the seed as soon as it starts to become ripe, as it shatters off the stem too easily when fully ripe.

Problem solving:

Considered a robust crop, it has a low input requirement with good disease resistance. Likes the heat.

Favourite ways to use them:

Cooked like rice, or ground to make a flour it is highly nutritious and easily digested. It can also be sprouted for salads.

Contraindicated in high amounts for those with pancreatic, or thyroid problems because it contains polyphenolics called flavonoids like apigenin and luteolin – both of which (i find interestingly) can be purchased as health suppliments. If it was me, i’d check with my GP if i’m on medication and if all good i’d incorporate it into my already varied and balanced diet.
