Description
Organic Kohl Rabi: Delikatess Blue. Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes.
Kohl Rabi Delicatess Blue gives really attractive blue tubers with white flesh. Kohl rabi is a fast growing crop. Kohlrabi can be sown early, as it is not that sensitive to bolting.
How to grow:
Surface sow in Feb/March on heat in seed trays, prick out as they get first true leaves into modules. Bring on until they’re big enough to go outside from April, but not too big, plant about 25cms apart. Start direct sowing from April. It’s fast growing so sow successionally for harvesting May to October. Requires good fertilization.
Problem solving:
Keep slugs off young plants. Don’t let the tubes become too old or too big before consumption, because the tubers become “woody” at the bottom.
Favourite ways to eat them:
Grate into salads, slice into vegan lasagne as pasta substitute, cube into stews, caseroles, soups. Can be roasted and stir fried. Leaves are used the same as kale.
Cultural history:
A variety of broccoli cultivated by natural selection to have an enlarged edible stem. The first European record was recorded in Italy in 1554.
Avg contents: 80 seeds.
