How to grow:
Sow seeds thinly direct over March and April for harvest over July and August. They like a fertile bed in full sun.
Problem solving:
Not too many problems, keep slugs off young plants, keep a bit sheltered. For onion root fly prevention plant a row of carrots nearby.
Favourite ways to eat them:
From Stuttgart onions have a great mild flavour. Soak briefly in tepid water if you need it milder. We love them in salads and cheese sandwiches. Always a perfect start for cooked dishes, sauteed or sweated.
Cultural history:
Bred in cultivation for at least 7,000 years this biennial is one the whole world loves. Found as far back as the Bronze age, in ancient Chinese settlements, Egyptian tombs and Roman cities, it travels well as seeds and bulbs, and has antiseptic properties.
Weight approx. 275 seeds per gram.
