Description
Organic Onion: Red Baron seeds. Allium cepa.
A red onion, slightly flattened on top it has tasty firm bulbs with a great flavour.
How to grow:
Sow seeds in pots on at least 14C of heat starting in April/May. Grow on until they’re about 15cms tall, then plant out about 15cms apart. Direct sow thinly when weather is warm enough. Make sure they don’t dry out. Onions like full sun. Harvest as you need them, lift them all before the weather gets too damp, or 3 leaves have died off. Dry out before storage by laying out in a well ventilated place, greenhouse bench for eg.
Problem solving:
Keep slugs off when young. To avoid white rot, keep to the Allium part of your rotation. Plant beside carrots to deter onion root fly, you can put netting fence around your patch.
Favourite ways to eat them:
Onions have been a staple food in Ireland for a long time. Often the starting point for dishes fried in a little oil.
Cultural history:
Bred in cultivation for at least 7,000 years this biennial is one the whole world loves. Found as far back as the Bronze age, in ancient Chinese settlements, Egyptian tombs and Roman cities, it travels well as seeds and bulbs, and has antiseptic properties.
Weight, Approx. 275 seeds per gram.
