Description
Organic Onion: Ishikura Long White. Scallions. Allium fistulosum.
A strong salad onion with long thick stems. Forming no bulb it is a perfect bunching onion. It is totally frost hardy. If it is grown in autumn it is ready in spring and if grown in spring it’s ready in summer. Also tolerant against thrip.
How to grow:
Sow seeds thinly direct into well prepared soil successionally from February to August. Harvest from April on with continuous cropping. Sow in drills 1cm deep and 25cms apart.
Problem solving:
The short growing time makes them easy to grow. Protect young seedlings from slugs and sow in the Allium part of your rotation. If you sow them beside your row of carrots, the onions and carrots protect each other from pests.
Favourite ways to eat them:
Sauteed with kale, olive oil and salt. The mild taste makes them perfect for salads and sandwiches. Lovely in stir frys or sauteed whole as crudites.
Cultural history:
Thought to originate from the far east of Europe, scallions take their name from the ancient Canaan city of Ashkelon.
Packet weight 0.65g = ~300 seeds.
