Organic Pea: Blauwschokker. Purple pod. Pisum sativum.
Organic Pea: Blauwschokker or Purple snap, aptly named for its lovely purple flowers and pods! A dwarf type field pea, similar to a green pea in that you can only eat the seeds not the pods. Not only is it fun to say but sure to be a ‘shocker’ in your garden! :’D
How to grow:
Cultivate along a wire netting sowing on both sides of the net. Sow in February to transplant out in March or sow directly out in the ground in March/April for harvesting July to September or earlier under protection in pots.
Problem solving:
Mice love to eat them hence planting at 3-4cms deep. If you’ve a real problem start in pots until they’ve sprouted then plant out. Snails like them, put if you go out at dusk you can pick them off. Another problem you can have with peas if planted later is powdery mildew. You can keep this to a minimum by, watering regularly and making sure the roots don’t dry out, watering from below, prick out infected leaves and destroy them, encourage movement of air through the crop. If you have the pea moth you can cover the crop with enviromesh in June and July when they are laying.
Favourite ways to eat them:
They are best consumed fresh but the seeds can also be frozen (blanche shortly before freezing). If left to ripen longer the dried seeds can also be used.
Cultural history:
From the Mediterranean basin and the Near East it’s been dated back to Neolithic times and later in Egypt from 4,800BC, it had travelled to India by about 2,500BC.
