Description

Organic Saint Benedict’s Thistle. Cnicus benedictus.

Organic Saint Benedict’s Thistle Cnicus benedictus is a herbaceous annual also known as blessed thistle. It has large leaves edges with spines and thistle like yellow flowers surrounded by spiney bracts.

How to grow

Sow seeds indoors in large modules in March or April, planting out when around 3cms tall, or better for the plant, sow straight outdoors from May when the soil has warmed up.
Adapts well to most soil types. Sow about 0.5cms depth. Allow 30cms between plants. Flowers July, August and September.

Problem solving

It doesn’t like its roots distrubed too much so if you want to start if off indoors try using block modules or peat pots to minimise root disturbance when planting out. It needs full sun and good drainage.

Uses

Medicinally, it has long been used in herbal medicine as a bitter, a nerve tonic and to aid digestion. Make into a herbal tea.
Too much can cause a reaction in some people. Sources Wikipedia and Sativa saatgut.
