Description
Organic Squash: Musquee de Provence. Cucurbita moschata.
A traditional variety bred in southern France. Gorgeous big cushion shaped squashes of between 5 – 15 kgs. Allow them time to ripen fully and you’ll be rewarded with a delicious squash. Ths skin is greeny/yellow with dark orange flesh. Stores well. Save your seeds for next year!
How to grow:
Sow seeds in pots on heat in April. Grow on till there are three true leaves then plant out in the ground when there’s no chance of a frost. Covering with fleece offers some protection if you get caught out. Plant 80cms apart and keep well fed and watered, preferably from below. This variety grows vigorously and can have a climbing habit. Development time 125 days.
Problem solving:
Keep slugs off when young. Can get mildew on the leaves, planting in full sun helps this, remove any badly affected leaves.
Favourite ways to eat them:
Versitile in the kitchen, can be added to soups, stews and great in peanut butter curry. You can bake wedges in the oven – drizzle with oil and season. Hollow out, stuff with lots of veggie delights and bake. Can make sweet pumpkin pie or my favourite pumpkin crumble.
Cultural history:
This creeping vine in the cucurbitaceae family originates from India, cultivated for 1,000’s of years.
Avg contents: 10 seeds.
