Organic Sunflower: Large Flowered. Helianthus annuus.
The large flowered sunflower is the classic sunflower with a mostly, unbranched stem, big yellow flowers with a dark brown heart. These big sunflowers can grow up to over 2 meters high. The big black seeds are edible and can be picked from end of September. The ripe seeds are loose and can be picked directly. The large sunflower is an excellent plant for bees! The birds love the seeds if you can resist temptation.
How to grow:
Sow seeds in modules under cover in from March to May. Once they’re about 7-8″ tall plant outside or in large pots in a sheltered place outside. Feed well.
Being so tall the wind can knock them over so you can help them with a stake in the ground. If you feed them well you’ll get the best out of them.
Favourite ways to use them:
Flowering period July to October. Bees love them.
