Organic Sunflower: Velvet Queen. Helianthus annuus.
Sunflowers are great for bees and butterflies, this one has branched stems and medium sized flowers, the petals are a lovely warm bronze-red colour. The plants can grow up to 2 metres high.
How to grow:
Sow seeds in modules under cover in from March to June. Once they’re about 7-8″ tall plant outside or in large pots in a sheltered place outside. Feed well.
Being so tall the wind can knock them over so you can help them with a stake in the ground. If you feed them well you’ll get the best out of them.
Favourite ways to use them:
This sunflower is a good cut flower. Flowering period from July to October.
There’s about 70 species of sunflower, most originating from the Americas. They’re a member of the daisy family, big daisys!
