Description
Organic Squash: Wilhelmsburger. Brassica napus napobrassica.
Green topped, yellow fleshed swede. Easy to grow with firm and tasty flesh. Stores well and cold tolerant.
How to grow:
Sow seeds thinly, direct into a well prepared seed bed outside. Thin to 20cms in rows 45cms apart. Lift late Autumn and store as other roots.
Problem solving:
Keep slugs off when young. Can be affected by flea beetle, club root and soft rot, so observe your Brassica rotation and sow into ground that drains well.
Favourite ways to eat them:
You’ll have yourself a taste of Scotland with neeps and tattys. Just peel and cube the swede, simmer like you would cook spuds until soft, drain and mash with salt, pepper and butter/oil, you’ll maybe be surprised just how good it is :). An essential ingredient in Cornish pasties.
Cultural history:
Thought to be a cross between a cabbage and a turnip
Avg contents: 250 seeds.
