Description
Organic Turnip: Zurcher. Brassica rapa.
An attractive purple skinned turnip. Round in shape with white flesh. Easy to grow and good for storing as well as eating fresh.
How to grow:
Sow seeds successionally outdoors in a well prepared seed bed throughout June and July in shallow drills about 35cms apart. Harvest from September to November. Drop a few seeds together so they grow in an easy to harvest bunch for eating straight away. Or plant farther apart for larger roots that are good for storing and also for carving at Haloween. They’ll be ready to harvest from the size of a golf ball being fairly fast growing, dependant on the weather.
Problem solving:
Keep slugs off when young. Keep well watered so they don’t bolt. Flea beetle can affect the leaves, but they’re not in for very long so they can tolerate this.
Favourite ways to eat them:
Turnip skin is thin, so you can roast them whole, or cut up and boil, lovely mashed up with salt and butter.
Cultural history:
Cultivated for centuries for their great taste and nutritional value.
Avg contents: 1g (~ 520 seeds).
