Description
Organic Vervain. Verbena bonariensis.
Vervain is a very pretty short term perennial flower, lasting about 4-5 years. Stems with pale purple flowers reach 4′ in height. The flower heads resemble those on lilac trees or buddleas, and are similarly attractive to many different kinds of butterflies and also other polliinators.
How to grow:
Sow seeds in modules under cover in February as the seeds require cold to germinate. Surface sow or cover very lightly. Plant out from May onwards. Direct sow outside in May. Plant out 30cms apart. Prefers well drained soil. Copes well with hot and dry conditions. Rigid stems hold it upright and keeps its structure. It self seeds lightly.
Problem solving:
Not so keen on clay soils. Keep it watered to help it provide nectar in dry spells.
Favourite ways to use them:
Long flowering period from beginning of July to end of October. Insects love them, in particular butterflies but also moths, bees and hoverflies.

Originates from South Africa.
Avg contents: 400 seeds.
