Description

General

Scrophularia nodosa, Figwort. A native, herbaceous, perennial plant that can range in height from 0.5 – 1m. It grows upright with a thick, square stem and a horizontal root stock. Small reddish-brown flowers with green lower lobes. The leaves are pointed, sharp toothed and oval in shape.

Habitat

Widespread native plant known for loving damp,soggy areas.  Can be found on riverbanks, hedgebanks, woods, on moist, cultivated waste ground or in ditches.

How to grow

Can be grown from seed in trays in early spring or autumn. When large enough to handle, prick out and transplant into the ground or containers. Grow in moist soil in sun or partial shade. Cut back after flowering unless you want the seedheads ro harvest your own seeds.  Protect young plants from slugs, caterpillars and Figwort Weevil. Generally disease-free.
