Seed Conservation Training Day – Sat 24th August 2024

£80.00

  • EUR: €95.17

Join our Seed Conservation Training Day to gain the knowledge and skills necessary for starting your own seed conservation journey. Seeds are the foundation of all life, yet our reliance on supermarkets in spring limits our connection to this vital process. Our comprehensive course offers a holistic approach, combining theoretical understanding with practical skills in seed conservation. Through a full day of in-person training, you will be introduced to both the theoretical and practical aspects of seed conservation. We strongly believe in learning by doing, so once you acquire the necessary knowledge, we will take you to our wildflower crop, where you can witness and participate in seed collection. This hands-on experience, working alongside expert Debbie, is an invaluable introduction to the field of seed conservation.

Your Facilitator

Debbie is the CEO of True Harvest Seeds and has been making high quality, scientific seed collection since 2014. Trained by Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank she has banked over 330 wild flower and tree seed collections in the True Harvest Seed Bank as well as the Millennium Seed Bank at Kew. On site she keeps the seed bank, a crop of native wildflowers and an apiary of bees. With extensive experience in seed conservation, vegetable seed breeding and plant propagation she has a great wealth of theoretical and practical knowledge.

On The Day

The training day is delivered in two parts:
1. In the morning, we will gather in the polytunnel and look at some of the theory surrounding seed collecting and conservation. This is very much an opportunity to ask your questions!
2. In the afternoon, after lunch, we’ll go outside and show you how to make a scientific seed collection using our wildflower crop at True Harvest Seeds as an example. We’ll reconvene inside and look at initial cleaning, drying, and methods to go on with until storage.

Depending on weather we may need to change the times slightly to get the most out of the day.
