Description

Common name:
Sea-aster. Luibh bhléine.

General:
Tripolium pannonicum, Sea-aster. This population originates from Co Down. Irish Grid reference: J585502.
Perennial. Purple-blue daisy like rays with a yellowish centre to 70cms, glossy deep green fleshy leaves.

Benefits:
While it can be kind of scrappy looking, it’s unusual colouring sets it apart. Great for bees and hardy.

Habitat:
Can grow in a rock garden with scarce soil, yet can tolerate wet feet, pretty versatile, it prefers full sun and an occasional dose of salt as it’s a coastal plant. Like other salt loving plants, It does occasionally make its way along a salted road inland.

Sowing guidelines:
Sow from late autumn to early spring in trays or modules, prick out into modules, then plant out when large enough.

We didn’t find any cultural uses or traditions, so if you know of any we’d love to hear it.
