General:
Vicia sativa, Common vetch. This population originates from Co Down. Irish Grid reference: J594448.
Hardy annual. Attractive pea flowers, pale and dark lilac colour, can be variable.

Benefits:
Great for bumble bees and particularly emerging queens who are starting their colony. Vetches also fix nitrogen into the soil. An arable edible, the green parts are good in moderation for livestock, a green manure or cover crop.

Habitat:
Scrambles up through grass, crops, hedgerows and the like with long stems and clasping tendrils.

Sowing guidelines:
Sow from late autumn to early spring in trays or modules, prick out into modules, then plant out when large enough.
