Description
Organic Dwarf French Bean. Maxi. Phaseolus vulgaris.
We grew Maxi for our vegetable box scheme every year and it was great. It grows so well and successional picking prolongs its productive season, as does successional sowing. It’s tolerant to MBV1 virus. Pods are around 20cms long, the plant about 55cms high, no need to stake, but protect from the wind, especially when they’re starting out.
How to grow:
Start them in pots in April and plant out in May. Or sow direct outside in May, 2 seeds, 5cms deep, 20cms apart and thin out.
Problem solving:
Pretty much problem free. Just take the usual precautions for slugs and snails. Give them a water if you have a drought.
Favourite ways to eat them:
Eat the whole bean, the younger you pick them the more tender they are. Amazing in salads, or lightly steamed drizzled with olive oil and salted. A fabulous addition to stir fries and stews. The combination of beans and rice is well known worldwide, the combination makes up a complete or whole protein – defined as a food source of protein that contains an adequate proportion of each of the nine essential amino acids necessary in the human diet. Perfect if you’re vegan.
Beans can be frozen for use later, just blanch them lightly first.
Cultural history:
An ancient crop, one of the oldest we cultivated. Originating from the south and central Americas, it has been grown in Europe since the 16th century.
Avg contents: 50 seeds.
