Description

Common name: Field scabious. Cab an Ghasáin.

General:
This population originates from Co Down. Irish Grid reference: J592421.
Hardy perennial. A pale purple summer flower, height up to 20” and usually out before devil’s bit scabious.

Benefits:
Helps towards the end of the July gap and very beautiful.

Habitat:
Open meadow, happier once well established, birds love the seeds and so do moth grubs.

Sowing guidelines:
Sow seed in autumn into trays with sand in the mix, keep moist. Germination usually eratic, so prick out seedlings when they are big enough but leave the trays and you’ll maybe get more emerging, can still come after several months.

Cultural history:
Said to cure skin conditions, hence the name, scabious.
